The National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the National Assembly the Lao People’s Democratic Republic Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Promoting Cooperation

Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei HENG SAMRIN, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia and President of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF), held a discussion with H.E. Ms. Pany Yathotou, President of the National Assembly of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, in the morning of 14 January 2019 at Sokha Siem Reap Resort and Convention Center, Siem Reap province, on the occasion of her participation in the 27th Annual Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF-27), in the beautiful historical province of Siem Reap Angkor of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

In the meeting, the two presidents expressed satisfaction over, and are proud of the continued smooth cooperation between the two legislative bodies, which have always supported each other in the international forums both in the region and the world, and the two sides signed the Memorandum of Understanding to further deepen cooperation in the years ahead.

In response, Lao PDR National Assembly President H.E. Ms. Pany Yathotou expressed her profound thanks and congratulations to the parliament of the Kingdom of Cambodia on the smooth organization of the APPF-27, which has been of great significance. She stated that she observed the Kingdom of Cambodia has scored remarkable progress which is a clear reflection of the right and capable leadership of the Cambodian People’s Party, which won a landslide victory in the general election held in July 2018. The Lao National Assembly president continued by saying that she strongly supports the substance of the MoU singed and proposed expanding cooperation between the two legislative bodies from the leadership to the specialized commission levels, especially organizing joint seminars to exchange views and good experiences.


H.E. Ms. Pany Yathotou further proposed that the governments of the two countries should continue to elevate cooperation on trade into new heights.

The National Assembly of the Lao PDR also thanked Cambodia, who pledged to purchase electricity from Laos.

Lastly, Cambodian National Assembly President Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei HENG SAMRIN expressed his commendation to the National Assembly of the Lao PDR for successfully hosting the 17th Meeting of the APPF in 2009, which has significantly contributed to the enhancement of the effective role of this regional forum towards the realization of common vision for the sake of peace, stability and prosperity.
