Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei HENG SAMRIN, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, presided over the Meeting of Women Parliamentarians of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF), in the afternoon of 14 January 2019 at Sokha Siem Reap Resort and Convention Center.

In the meeting, Samdech President stressed the importance of the role of women, but saying that our world today is undergoing tectonic power shifts along with deep strategic uncertainty and complex geopolitical competition. The liberal international order is under assault from unilateralism, protectionism, and xenophobia. However, we should not lose sight of promoting human security and people-centered development. In this context, we need to stay focused and double our efforts to realize the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 5.

On the occasion, Samdech National Assembly President continued by offering invaluable recommendations as follows:

Firstly, we should create a monitoring, evaluation and learning system for gender equality among APPF members to monitor the implementation of our resolutions on women’s empowerment and gender equality to support each other to achieve SDG 5.

We should establish a working group to assess the impacts of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, mainly on women and girls, and organize a strategy that allows women to improve their status consistent with this revolution and to take advantage of the use of modern technology. We are all aware that in this latest stage, the Fourth Industrial Revolution has changed global economic structures, communities and human identities. The last three industrial revolutions were of great importance and this fourth revolution is moving even faster with innovations and new technologies spreading across the world. Faced with such developments, we need to swiftly build a system to ensure common interests while weighing all possible risks in a responsible manner.

We should design a sustainable and comprehensive education policy and allocate more resources to promote girls’ education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Education is the most powerful tool to enable and empower women and girls to realize their potential.

We also need to pay more attention to enhancing gender equality, particularly providing basic education for vulnerable girls living in remote areas in the Asia-Pacific and other parts of the world.

All social-protection systems should increase funding and further focus on women and girls, especially those affected by disasters.

It is emphasized that the Meeting of Women Parliamentarians of the APPF discussed issues of common interest concerning political, economic and security situation. After the opening address delivered by Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei HENG SAMRIN, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia and President of the APPF-27, the meeting continued its proceedings under the presidency of H.E.
