After smoothly proceeding for three days, the 27th Annual Meeting of the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum, which is hosted by the parliament of Cambodia, came to a successful conclusion followed by a closing ceremony, which was auspiciously held under the high presidency of Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei HENG SAMRIN, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia and President of the APPF-27, at Sokha Siem Reap Resort and Convention Center in the evening of 16 January 2019.

In his closing address, Samdech President highlighted that the historic APPF-27 event in Siem Reap has offered an excellent platform for all honorable delegates to generate practical ideas and long-term visions for a key strategy in building the Asia-Pacific as a region of peace, stability, harmony and sustainable development in response to the aspirations of all nations.

I have noticed that this three-day forum has proceeded efficiently with lively debates in a friendly atmosphere of mutual solidarity and cooperation as well as a profound sense of responsibility leading to the unanimous adoption of our important resolutions. Peace and stability is indeed a precondition for national construction and development, the president emphasized.

The APPF-27 was organized under the theme of “Strengthening Parliamentary Partnership for Peace, Security and Sustainable Development” and discussed 4 crucial matters, namely the Meeting of Women Parliamentarians of the APPF, Regional Cooperation Matters, Economic and Trade Matters and Political and Security Matters with 43 draft resolutions prepared by the APPF member countries. The annual meeting finally approved to select only 15 draft resolutions out of 43. 14 resolutions were adopted by the meeting and the rest of the resolution will be discussed later in the 28th Annual Meeting of the APPF, which will be hosted by Australia in 2020.

Samdech APPF-27 President also stated that adopted resolutions address key regional issues such as maintaining peace, building mutual trust, putting a strong focus on women and girls, combatting terrorism and cybercrime, mitigating climate change, respects of human rights, promoting diversity of cultural expression and tourism – and especially expanding partnership cooperation on free trade and investment in the region.

He further stressed that   Peace and stability is indeed a precondition for national construction and development. A country can enjoy neither development nor prosperity if it faces war and instability. Peace and development must go hand in hand. A country that enjoys peace without development cannot be sustained. We therefore need to further strengthen closed and comprehensive cooperation, notably in the areas of diplomacy, economy, trade and investment, science and technology as well as social and cultural development. All our economies depend on each other for inclusive and prosperous economic growth. In essence, trade and investment is the main engine for growth.

Before the closing ceremony, presided over by Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei HENG SAMRIN, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, started, H.E. Ms. Khuon Sudary, Second Vice-President of the National Assembly and Chair of the Meeting of Women Parliamentarians, read the report of the outcome the Meeting of Women Parliamentarians to the plenary session.

The Chairman’s Statement and brief report on the Drafting Committee meetings were read by Honorable Hun Many, Chair of the Drafting Committee, followed by the signing of Joint Communiqué.

It is emphasized that the Kingdom of Cambodia is hosting the 27th Annual Meeting of the APPF, while Australia will host the next APPF event after Cambodia in 2020, and the Republic of Korea will host the 29th Annual Meeting of the APPPF in 2021 respectively. During the closing ceremony, the parliament of Cambodia has handed over the APPF flag to Australia, who is the next host of this event.
